What Causes Pet Dander Allergies?

Pet allergies are extremely common. They’re even more common for people with other allergies. Three in ten people who experience other allergies are allergic to pets as well. Moreso, cat allergies are more common than dog allergies. However, the causes of the allergies vary from person to person. Here are a few causes of pet dander allergies.

Pet Dander Allergies

One cause for pet allergies is, very simply, pet allergens. People with over-sensitive immune systems tend to react to harmless proteins in animals’ saliva, urine, or dander (dead skin cells). These allergens cause the immune system to have that reaction.

Pet Hair

Another cause for allergic reactions around pets is their hair. Now, pet hair is not an allergen itself. However, it does collect allergens from outside and in the house. The hair can collect dander, saliva, and urine which is what causes allergic reactions to pets.

Other People

You might have had an allergic reaction in a place that didn’t even have pets. That’s because pet allergens are everywhere. Someone who’s been around a dog or cat can carry the pet allergens on their clothing which then causes a reaction for someone around them.
