5 Most Common Reasons You Can’t Sleep

Not being able to sleep is an extremely common complaint in our world today. However, while it is common, it is an issue that can hinder your entire life if you are unable to get the sleep you need. Do not lose hope! There is always a cause for your sleepless or restless nights, and there is always a solution. Here are 5 of the most common reasons that people cannot sleep:

5 Reasons you can’t sleep

  • 5. Snoring – Whether it’s you, or the person you share the bed with doing the snoring, it will absolutely hinder your sleep. Not only that, but too much snoring might also have an effect on your relationship! Snoring can also be the result of a serious medical condition called sleep apnea. Luckily, there are tons of solutions to snoring including nasal strips, anti-snore pillows and mouthpieces, and CPAP machines for those with sleep apnea. If you snore or have trouble breathing at night, please contact East Texas Sinus right away!
  • 4. Too much screen time before bed – The lights from your phone/computer/TV screens prevent your brain from releasing the hormones that help you fall asleep at night. This tricks your brain into thinking it should still be awake. Instead, try to read or do something that signals your brain that it is time to go to sleep.
  • 3. Caffeine or Alcohol before bed – Everyone knows that caffeine before bed prevents you from falling asleep, but did you know that too much during the day can have the same effect? Alcohol also prevents you from getting a goodnight’s rest. Both prevent your body from entering the REM stage, which does not allow you to sleep deeply.
  • 2. Going to bed hungry – If you go to bed hungry, your rumbling stomach will prevent your mind from shutting down. However, this does not mean you have to snack before bed! It is recommended that you instead eat 6 small meals per day.
  • 1. Thinking too much – Yes, we all have been there, sometimes you just cannot turn your brain off before bed! This problem affects everyone, especially those with anxiety. This problem is not easy to solve, but there are some things you can do to help prevent this from happening quite as often. Meditation and calming exercises before bed can seriously cut down on the time it takes you to fall asleep.

If you are still struggling to fall asleep, there might be an underlying sleep disorder preventing it. Sleep apnea is a very common condition and one that we excel at treating.
